Police shoot at suspects, IIU investigating

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into an incident that happened just after 8:30 pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service officers had responded to a report of an assault with a weapon near McLeod Avenue and Raleigh Street.

Police pursued the suspects as they took off in a vehicle but had to call off the pursuit because the suspects were driving at dangerous speeds.

Other patrol units found the suspects stopped in traffic at Panet Road and Nairn Avenue and initiated a containment block. The suspects rammed through and officers fired their weapons at the vehicle in an attempt to stop the threat of harm or even death to them and other officers in the vacinity.

The suspects continued to flee as police pursued. Near Marion St. and Archibald St. the suspects began driving along the railway line. Police captured three suspects, a female and two males.

One of the males, age 23, had suffered a minor wound as a result of a gunshot, He was treated and released from hospital.

A Winnipeg Police Street Supervisor was also injured during the arrest. He was struck by a moving train. He was treated then released from hospital.

The IIU is mandated to investigate the incident because it involves the discharge of a firearm that caused an injury.
