Police involved in a standoff on Langside street

Winnipeg Police Service Tactical Support Team was out in force on Saturday night, August 13, 2022, in the 300 block of Langside Street.

Just after 9:10 pm tactical and general patrol officers surrounded a multi-suite building. The armoured vehicle (ARV) was brought in and officers quickly attached a battering ram to the front of it.

Police were looking for a male suspect and announced over a loudspeaker that they had a warrant to search the building and knew the suspect was inside. It is not known at this time what the suspect is wanted for.

Sources tell News 4 that officers suspected that the suspect was heavily armed

Officers in the ARV breached the rear door of the building using the attached battering ram. About 30 minutes later the ram was used to punch out windows on the south side of the building.

Tactical Support Team members called out to the suspect several times explaining that they knew he was inside a suite in the building and demanding he come out with his hands up. They also told the suspect that officers could only guarantee his safety if he followed their commands.

Throughout the night police used many tactics in an effort to have the suspect surrender. OC pellets were fired into the building at one point followed several hours later by multiple rounds of teargas that were fired into the building through a window.

As Saturday turned into Sunday officers continued to call out the suspect without any answer.

Around 4:45 am a drone was flown inside the building in an effort to find the suspect without the desired results. Police then brought in what can only be described as a robot dog to search the building. The robot walked up the front stairs and into the building. Within 20 minutes the robotic K-9 was back outside. Police then use the drone a second time inside the structure.

Around 6:30 am officers entered the structure to search for the suspect. At 6:42 am the suspect was taken out of the building in handcuffs and walked to a nearby command post.
