Emergency crews responded to reports of a collision on Portage Avenue at Colony Street around 12:40 Saturday morning, September 26, 2020.
Witnesses tell News 4 that a pedestrian was hit by a white sedan while crossing the street. The vehicle then hit a traffic light standard and continued to slide coming to rest on the median.
Before police arrived on the scene the driver of the car fled then returned a few minutes later to retrieve what appeared to be a backpack. They then left once more.
The pedestrian was transported to hospital in critical condition.
Portage avenue was closed overnight as investigators worked the scene.
Police have one person in custody.
At one point during the investigation a motorcycle went around a police unit blocking Colony Street at St. Mary Avenue and drove through the scene recklessly at a high rate of speed. The rider was arrested several blocks away say sources.
News 4 has reached to Winnipeg Police for more information.
