Police Investigate Series of Animal Cruelty Cases in Winnipeg

December 31, 2024: The Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit is currently investigating a disturbing series of animal cruelty reports that have surfaced throughout December 2024. Authorities are urging the community to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying the perpetrators.

In three separate incidents between December 8th and 30th, approximately six deceased cats were discovered by citizens who frequent the area for recreational activities. The grisly discoveries were made underneath the Summit Road bridge, north of Summit/Saskatchewan, with some of the deceased animals found in bags or lying directly on the path. Foul play was evident in the condition of the animals.

General Patrol officers responded, engaging with the individuals who discovered the deceased cats and coordinating with the Humane Society and Animal Services. Investigators noted that some of the animals had pet identifiers, and efforts are underway to trace their ownership.

The Major Crimes Unit acknowledges that there have been previous reports of deceased cats in the Point Douglas area but has yet to establish any connections between these incidents and the recent findings.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information regarding these acts of cruelty. Citizens can contact the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219 or anonymously reach out to Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or visit winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
