Police inspect a suspicious package on River Avenue

UPDATED

Winnipeg Police Service is investigating after a suspicious package was located on River Avenue just east of Donald Street on Tuesday afternoon, December 29, 2020.

Just after 1:45 pm, a Canada Post worker was emptying a mailbox on the south side of the street when they noticed an unusual package that was wrapped with a large amount of tape. Out of an abundance of caution, police were called.

Police took to social media to warn the public to avoid the area as officers cordoned off a one-block area surrounding the red mailbox and waited for members of the Bomb unit to arrive.

Officers approached the box cautiously and inspected the package. Shortly before 3:00 pm the all clear was given.

While officers were investigating the incident on River Avenue a second suspicious package call came into 911 from a Canada Post facility on McDermot Avenue. The package at that location was also inspected by the bomb unit and deemed safe.

Police do not know if the two incidents are linked.
