Citizen Online Police Crime Reporting System expanded to include non-urgent traffic/driving complaints.
Winnipeg Police have been using an online reporting system so the general public can easily report non-violent incidents since the fall of 2012.
The system was intended to make it easier for the public to interact with police and so far it has been a success.
As of January 4, 2017 the public can now report non-urgent traffic or driving complaints such as stop sign or red light infractions, speeding, aggressive or careless driving, speeding in schoo zones or passing a school bus with its lights flashing.
The addition of traffic matters is limited to non-urgent issues. If you are wanting to report impaired drivers, vehicle accidents or anything that is a concern to public safety you cannot report those online but should report by calling 911 or the non-emergency police service numbers.
The system received more than 16,000 reports from citizens in 2016 and police believe that it eases the amount of time victims of crime spend reporting incidents. The system also provides the Service with better data for crime analysis and deployment of resources and enables better management of call volumes through the Services Communications Centre.
Citizen Online Police Reporting System will now allow the following incident types to be reported online:
– Break & Enter Into Outbuildings
– Damage to Property
– Damage to a Vehicle
– Lost Property
– Theft (including Shoplifting & Gas Drive Offs)
– Theft from a Vehicle
– Traffic Complaint
