At approximately 8:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received reports of a late model pick-up truck equipped with emergency lighting attempting to conduct traffic stops in the area of Higgins Avenue and the Louise Bridge.
By 10:00 p.m., Central District General Patrol officers located the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado parked in an open field on the 100 block of Higgins Avenue. The driver exited the vehicle, challenging officers’ authority and jurisdiction. Ignoring police commands, the individual retreated to his vehicle.
Officers, met with resistance, extracted the driver and arrested him using a conducted energy weapon. No injuries were reported.
A search of the vehicle revealed:
- An emergency light bar affixed to the windshield
- A conducted energy baton (2ft)
- Two collapsible batons
- Approximately 41 grams of cannabis (estimated street value: $615)
- Contraband cigarettes (15 cartons/3,000 cigarettes)
A 47-year-old male of Winnipeg now faces charges including:
- Possession of a Prohibited Weapon Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Weapon x 2
- Personating a Peace Officer
- Assaulting a Peace Officer
- Resisting a Peace Officer
- Unlawful Possession of Sale of Tobacco Products
Additionally, the male was charged under the Excise Tax Act with Unlawful Possession of Sale of Tobacco Products. He has been released by way of Appearance Notices.
