Public helps police identify person of interest

Winnipeg police have identified the person of interest they were searching for after a girl reported a man had deposited an unknown substance on her sweater in St. Vital Mall.

The girl’s mother said she believed the substance was semen and reported the incident to mall security last week.

Winnipeg Police Sex Crimes Unit distributed a picture of the alleged suspect on Saturday, February 25, 2017 and asked for help from the public in identifying the person of interest.

Police report that the man has now been identified and interviewed by officers. They say he has been cooperative.

The man has not been charged with a crime but police say that may happen once they get a forensic report on exactly what the substance is.

The investigation continues.
