Police Destroy Suspected IED in Centennial Neighbourhood

On Saturday night, September 21, 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) responded to a report of a suspicious package in the Centennial neighbourhood. The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 PM when a resident discovered a package in the back lane that appeared to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

The package was described as containing a blinking red light, various wires, with smoke coming from it and appeared to be filled with tacks. The resident immediately contacted the authorities, who swiftly arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

The Winnipeg Police Service cordoned off the back lane between William Avenue and Elgin Avenue and Gertie Street and Ellen Street. The WPS Bomb Unit was called in to safely handle the package. After a thorough examination, the bomb squad determined that the package was indeed a potential threat and took necessary precautions to neutralize it.

Shortly after 1:10 am on Sunday, September 22, 2024, a WPS Bomb disposal robot was deployed and the device was shot and destroyed

During the incident Officers went door to door to advise residents in the vicinity to stay indoors and to not enter their backyards until the situation was resolved.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were called in and staged a block away from the device as a precaution. No injuries were reported,

Police, Fire and Paramedic crews remained on the scene until about 3:00 am.
