Police, corrections staff and firefighters fall victim to COVID-19

On Sunday. October 11, 2020 officials from Manitoba Corrections, Winnipeg Police Service and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reported that members of their staff had been infected with the COVID-19.

Winnipeg Police Service

Winnipeg Police issued a media release stating that one of their members who worked in the headquarters building in the Service Centre had tested positive for the virus. The officer last worked in the Service Centre on Friday, October 2, Saturday, October 3 and Monday, October 5 in the morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service

Hours later staff at Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were sent a memo stating that a firefighter from Station 1 on Ellen Street had tested positive for the virus and had last worked a shift on October 6, 2020. Close contacts of the firefighter including coworkers have been told to self-monitor.

Manitoba Corrections

Staff at three correctional facilities, Headingley Correctional Institution, Milner Ridge Correctional Centre and the Winnipeg Remand Centre have also tested positive for COVID-19.

Corrections officials say that the number of infected staff is low and that testing is underway on inmates who may have had close contact. At this time the province does not consider the infections within the facilities to be an outbreak.

Manitoba Public Health was informed of all cases and is investigating close contacts.
