Police continue to investigate the death of Melissa Cook

It is coming up on the anniversary of the death of Melissa Cook and Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes investigators are asking for help from the public.

Melissa was an Indigenous woman from Sapotaweyak Cree Nation who had moved to Winnipeg in April 2022. Police believe that Melissa was unhoused while in Winnipeg and may have been living in various encampments in the city. She was also known to have spent time at the Siloam Mission and in the South Point Douglas area.

Investigators believe that Melissa sustained burns to her body between late June and early July when she notified a shelter about her injuries. She was taken to hospital where she remained until her death on August 20, 2022.

Police have been following leads and working to learn more about Melissa and her activities over the summer of 2022. Investigators are hoping to talk to anyone who knew Melissa or knew about her injuries.

Detectives are also wanting to speak to anyone who may have been victimized in a similar way.
