Police car rammed as suspect fled in stolen camper van

Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a 31, year-old man after he allegedly rammed a police patrol unit while fleeing from officers on Friday, September 22, 2023.

Police say that officers spotted the suspect, who was wanted by police, driving a camper van in the area of Salter Street and Flora Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle at Aikins Street and Manitoba Avenue but the as suspect attempted to flee he rammed the police vehicle and sped away. While the suspect was trying to get away from officers he crashed into two civilian vehicles causing the van to be inoperable. An adult female passenger and the suspect fled the crash scene, near Mcphillips Street and Redwood Avenue, on foot.

The suspect was located in the 1200 block of Troy Avenue and arrested.

Officers learned it had been stolen from the 2100 block of St. Mary’s Road earlier in the week. A search of the vehicle uncovered about $10,000 worth of prescription medications including 800 Xanax pills.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Travis Terry Lee Thater of Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon x 2
  • Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operance of a Conveyance
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Undertaking x 3

He was detained in custody.

Police have not said if the female passenger faces any charges.
