Police capture murder suspect in New Year’s Day bar fight

Winnipeg Police have captured Michael Caribou a suspect wanted in connection to the murder of Jason Peter John James on September 22, 2018.

Police were called to the Regal Beagle bar in the Marlborough hotel on Smith Street in the early morning hours of New Year’s day after several highly intoxicated people were involved in multiple fights inside the bar.

At one point officers were surrounded by the unruly crowd and assaulted. Backup was called in and more than 20 police officers and cadets were needed to diffuse the situation.

The bar was issued an emergency closure order.

Police say that Caribou was a participant in the bar fights.

Upstairs of the bar on the seventh floor of the hotel an intoxicated male caused more than $10,000 in damage to a suite. At one point a table was thrown through the window raining glass shards and debris onto the sidewalk and street below.

As officers moved in to arrest the suspect he assaulted one of them while being taken into custody.

Other New Year’s eve/day incidents around the city included a “Strong-arm” robbery, nine assaults on the public plus six assaults on Peace officers, Multiple drugs and weapons arrests and a home invasion in Shaunessy Park.

Police also say that a male was shot and killed in the 400 block of Nairn Avenue and there were a string of 15 seperate armed robberies across the city

All told 92 people were arrested between December 31, 2018 and January 2, 2019.
