Winnipeg police investigators have arrested and charged two people in connection to the assault on a 28-year-old male ridesharing driver on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.
The incident happened outside a restaurant in the 600 block of St. James Street around 7:00 pm. Police said that a group of people left the restaurant and got into a nearby rideshare vehicle. When the driver of the vehicle told the group that the capacity of the vehicle was exceeded the suspects threatened the driver. During the altercation, one of the suspects pistol-whipped the victim causing minor injuries. While exiting the vehicle investigators say the suspects tried to steal the victim’s cell phone.
Police say that as the male suspect was fleeing he fired a gun several times towards the victim’s vehicle. No damage or injuries were reported.
Investigators were able to identify a male and a female suspect. On January 21, around 9:00 pm officers spotted the pair in a vehicle near Dale Boulevard and Kersey Bay. Police initiated a high-risk traffic stop and took both suspects into custody. On Sunday, January 22, a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 100 block of Dellwood Crescent.
Officers seized approximately $18,000.00 in cash, Cocaine, Oxycodone and assorted clothing believed to have been worn during the assault and robbery. Officers have yet to recover the gun used in the incident.
A 21-year-old male from Berens River is facing the following charges for his alleged involvement:
– Robbery
– Utter Threats- Cause Death or Bodily Harm
– Assault with a Weapon
– Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
– Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
– Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
– Discharge a Firearm with Intent
– Discharge a Firearm in a Reckless Manner
– Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
– Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x 6
– Warrant (Public Interest)
A 19-year-old female from Long Plain First Nation, is facing the following charges for her alleged involvement:
– Robbery
– Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
Both were detained in custody.
