Police arrest liquor mart robber who assaulted staff

Winnipeg Police have one person in custody and are searching for two others after a violent attack in the Tyndall Park liquor mart.

Police say they responded to the armed robbery around 3:45 pm.

Investigators say that three male suspects armed with knives entered the store and while two of them began stealing a number of liquor bottles the third male began verbally and physically engaging with staff.

Video of the robbery for inside the store shows one of the suspects out of control as he attacks three staff members.

The assailant assaulted a female employee by hitting her in the head. She along with a security guard were able to make it into an office nearby.

The suspect then turned his attention to a second female behind a counter. The suspect walks behind the counter, points towards the cash register, then without provocation punches the woman in the face. The punch knocked the victim unconscious.

NOTE – Video of the assault may be disturbing to some viewers. The face of the assailant has been blurred due to his status as a minor.

Police say that she was taken to hospital in critical condition but has been upgraded to stable.

The video shows the suspect then turns his attention to a male employee and after a few seconds of yelling at him, he launches an attack. The male employee defends himself and can be seen fighting with the suspect.

Once the three suspects left the store they continued their rampage.

The suspect who had assaulted the liquor mart employees then pushed his way into another mall business and demanded money. One employee at that business was assaulted but not seriously hurt.

The assailant then tried to carjack a woman and her daughter but was unsuccessful.

He then tried to steal purses from two other females. While they laid on the ground police say the suspect threatened them with a liquor bottle.

Several bystanders intervened at this point and held the suspect for police.

The 15-year-old male youth was arrested and charged with multiple offences including six counts of robbery, aggravated assault, assault (x3), six counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possess weapon and mischief under $5,000.

He was detained in custody.

Police are looking for two other suspects in connection to the assaults and robbery.
