Police are investigating two carjackings that happened Monday

Winnipeg Police are investigating two unrelated carjackings that happened within an hour of each other on Monday morning April 20, 2020.

Bannerman Avenue

The first carjacking occurred around 8:41 am near Bannerman Avenue and Charles Street.

Police were called to the area after an injured 68-year-old male was found lying in a back lane. Officers determine that the man had been run over by his own vehicle while it was being carjacked.

The victim was confronted by a male and a female when he was getting into his vehicle. He was hit with an object and pulled for his vehicle. As the suspect fled they drove over the victim causing serious injuries. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

Police say the vehicle was spotted around 9:30 am near McPhillips Street and Mapleglen Drive being driven by a female. Officers tried to contain the vehicle but it sped off and the pursuit ended. The car was found abandoned in the Riverbend area.

Just after noon police received a call about a resident in the area hearing a cry for help from a garbage bin. Police responded and say the female in the garbage bin was the same person who was seen driving the stolen vehicle. She had become wedged in the bin while trying to hide from police after running from the stolen vehicle.

Police say the 16-year-old female was found with the stolen vehicles keys. She was arrested and charged for her alleged involvement with Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer, Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited by Order Under Criminal Code.

She was detained in custody.

The Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate.

Health Sciences Centre

The second carjacking occurred around 9:25 am outside the Health Sciences Centre.

Police say that a 59-year-old man was unloading items from his vehicle when a male suspect confronted him and stole the vehicle. The mans 88-year-old father was sitting in the passenger seat when the vehicle was stolen.

A few minute later police spotted the stolen SUV on Notre Dame Avenue. When it stopped at a traffic light the 88-year-old male escaped the vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle he fell and suffered minor injuries. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.

As officers attempted to contain the stolen SUV it rammed into the police cruiser and took off. A pursuit began and during it a second police patrol unit was rammed.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in the Daniel McIntyre neighbourhood.

Major Crimes is continuing with the investigation and ask anyone with information that could assist investigators to call 204-986-6219. or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
