Police apologize after confirming officer took photo of an intoxicated man

Winnipeg Police offered an apology after they confirmed a Winnipeg Police officer took a picture of an intoxicated male.

On Friday, July 12, 2019, a photo taken by a passerby near Grant Avenue and Stafford Street made the rounds on social media and prompted an outcry over the conduct of emergency crews on scene.

Justin Highway was passing by and snapped a photo that shows the vulnerable male with his head on the shoulder of a Winnipeg firefighter with two police officers standing nearby. He told media that he had seen the female officer snap a photo of the male.

Winnipeg Police public information officer Rob Carver told media on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, that an officer did take a photo and will be disciplined through their regulatory process. He said that the man in the photo has spoken to police but he did not have the details of that conversation.

“We apologize to this individual. We know the citizens of Winnipeg expect us to treat everyone with dignity and respect and they deserve nothing less,” said Carver.
