Manitoba to review use of photo enforcement

The provincial government announced that a comprehensive review of photo enforcement will be conducted.

Although the legislation to allow photo enforcement has been in place since 2002 on the City of Winnipeg uses it.

“This review will assess how photo enforcement is used, where it is used and whether or not it is improving road safety.  As the current legislation has been in place for 17 years, it is time for us to evaluate the system to see if it’s working and where we can make improvements,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler.

The legislation was originally designed to help keep streets safe by fining those who travelled above the posted speed limits.

The review will look into the policy, legislative and program frameworks for both photo and non-photo enforcement activities. A specific focus of the review will be the efficacy of photo enforcement on road safety.

“Photo enforcement is intended to reduce speed violations, and therefore a review of it within the context of all speed-related enforcement programming is timely to ensure that it continues to support this goal,” the minister said.

The province says that the review should take about four months to complete once a vendor is selected.

The final report from the review will be used to help make decisions on the future of photo enforcement and road safety in the province.
