A photo display depicting 100 years of women in civic government was unveiled today by Winnipeg City Council Speaker Devi Sharma.
2021 marks a century since the first woman, Jessie Kirk, was sworn in as a Winnipeg City Councillor. In all 33 women have served Winnipeg including Susan Thompson who was elected mayor in 1992 and Devi Sharma who was elected first woman speaker in 2013.
“I am proud to celebrate the centennial of Jessie Kirk’s inauguration by unveiling this display that recognizes all the women who have served on Winnipeg City Council and blaze forth a path for increased representation in our civic government,” said Councillor Sharma. “It’s important for us to highlight these women as examples for current and future generations.”
