Personal health information breached after a break-in at government offices

A break-in at the Manitoba Health Appeal Board office on Portage Avenue has resulted in a breach of personal health information.

The break-in happened on Tuesday night, November 29, 2022.

Manitoba Health says that at this time the extent of the breach is not yet known but can confirm confidential information was securely stored in the office. It us believed that personal health information and other private information of some clients has been breached.

Staff have begun contacting clients who were potentially affected to notify them of the break-in and potential breach of privacy.

The office space is also shared with the Mental Health Review Board. It appears that only two MHRB applicant files were touched during the break-in and those affected have been contacted of will be contacted as soon as possible.

Winnipeg Police Service is investigating the incident and the break-in has been reported to the Manitoba Ombudsman.

Manitoba Health and Manitoba Mental Health and Community Wellness are fully co-operating with the investigation.

The province says they are reviewing the incident to determine if anything can be done to prevent a similar incident in the future.
