Patios set to stay open over the winter

The City of Winnipeg announced on Friday, October 9, 2020, that temporary patios will be allowed to stay open this winter.

Current temporary patios that were established over the summer have been given the green light to remain open until October 31 but registrants will need to reapply to have those patios remain open until March 31, 2021.

“The immediate extension of outdoor patios to October 31 and the creation of a winter program is one more step the City has been able to take in order to create more flexible conditions for the hospitality industry,” said Mayor Brian Bowman.

The city says that businesses that want to operate a patio over the winter must submit a new application beginning October 14. Additional reguirements will be required for winter operation including approved heat sources, size and materials of shelters or tents and snow removal.

A complete list of requirements for winter operation of patios can be found here |  Temporary Patio – General Safety Requirements.

There are currently 64 restaurants and taprooms with a registered temporary patio.
