The City of Winnipeg has stepped in to reverse parking tickets issued on Saturdays for downtown on-street parking.
Just before Christmas confusion set in over when complimentary parking took effect in downtown. For years the city had had stickers on parking pay stations that read “2-hour complimentary parking on Saturday” but recently Winnipeg Parking Authority (WPA) has started issuing tickets.
When questioned the WPA said that drivers were required to pay the maximum fee for the pay station then they would receive the additional 2-hour parking. According to the WPA, that information was posted on the city website and it is a policy that has been in place since 2012.
According to archives of the City of Winnipeg website, the information about Saturday parking was updated sometime between June 16 and December 17, 2017. Stickers on pay stations have not been updated.
After an outcry from citizens, the city has stepped in and the WPA has reverted to the previous practice of not issuing a ticket within the first two hours of parking downtown between 8:00 am and 5:30 pm on Saturdays.
The WPA will also be refunding or cancelling any tickets issued on Saturdays in the downtown between December 2 and December 23, 2017.
