More parking in the Exchange District could be a reality soon if the city’s public service get their way.
The city has been testing angled back-in parking on Bannatyne Avenue between Rorie Street and Waterfront Drive since July 2017 and the results say it is a success.
Angled parking added an additional 10 parking spaces over the two-block test area.
“With the ever-increasing popularity of the Exchange District as a shopping, dining and entertainment destination for Winnipeggers from across the city, making the most of parking in the area is crucial to its continued success,” said Point Douglas Ward Councillor Mike Pagtakhan. “The new back-in, angled parking on Bannatyne is a better fit for residents, businesses, and visitors alike, and we would like to thank the businesses and residents of the Exchange District for their patience, participation, and feedback as this recent pilot helped us to improve parking in the area.”
The pilot project showed the city that traffic in the area of the new parking was not adversely affected by the change to a one-way street in the two-block area of Bannatyne.
City officials want to expand the back-in angled parking to McDermot Avenue between Rorie Street and Waterfront Drive. This section of McDermot would also become one-way eastbound but will make an additional nine parking spaces available.
The city says that they are also looking a possibly adding, even more, back-in angled parking spots in other areas around the exchange to offset some of the loss of spots that will be caused with the construction of protected bike lanes in the area
The Winnipeg Parking Authority will also be adjusting loading zones in the area that will add 33 daytime parking spots and 4 evening parking spaces
