Parents face manslaughter charges after autopsy showed fentanyl intoxication in infant

Winnipeg Police Service says the parents of a one-year-old female child who suffered a sudden death on March 23, 2023, are facing charges following an investigation

Police say that a man called 911 after his child became unresponsive. First responders administered CPR before taking the girl to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The child has been identified as Hanna Boulette.

Following Hanna’s death her parents were arrested and charged for their alleged involvement with Criminal Negligence Causing Death. The male parent was also charged at the time for his alleged involvement with Possession of a Controlled Substance after officers found a small quantity of fentanyl on his person at the time of his arrest.

An autopsy determined that Hanna’s death was due to high levels of fentanyl intoxication. Investigators say that both parents were not forthcoming with details of the incident and were present and had been aware of Hanna’s fentanyl exposure before later making the 911 call.

Before arresting and charging the parents on February 2, 2024, at their McKenzie Street home, investigators spoke to Manitoba Prosecution Service which authorized the charges against them

Garry Daniel Adrian Bruce, 38 and 37-year-old Sabrina Faye Boulette were charged with Manslaughter for their alleged involvement.

Both parents were detained in custody.
