Brian Pallister is no longer as popular as he once was, in fact for the second time this fall his approval rating with voters has fallen.
According to quarterly polling data from the Angus Reid Institute, only 34 % of Manitobans approve of what Pallister is doing in the province. That is down from the fall of 2016 when more than 53% of Manitobans approved of the premier.
It is unlikely that the polling data will make any difference in the Pallister government’s aggressive agenda.
Since coming into office Pallister and his government have closed emergency rooms and reduced the workforce in crown corporations, the civil service and regional health authorities, all highly unpopular decisions.
They have also entrenched Manitoba as the only holdout in multiple battles with the federal government over Carbon Pricing, Health Transfer Payments and most recently Cannabis revenue sharing.
In the short term, at least, it appears the honeymoon is over. Whether or not the premier’s approval rating will continue to slide will depend on how he deals with issues in the future.
