Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) battled two structure fires in the early morning hours on Tuesday, September 29, 2020.
Burrows Avenue Fire
Winnipeg Police Service’s AIR-1 called in a working fire on Burrows Avenue around 2:28 am. While waiting for firefighters to arrive on the scene the helicopter crew used their siren to alert area resident to the fire.
Smoke and heavy flames were seen by firefighters as they arrived at the house. An offensive attack was immediately launched and the fire was under control by 3:20 am.
A neighbouring home was evacuated as a precaution.
One firefighter suffered an injury during the fire but did not require hospitalization.
Fire officials determined the blaze to be accidental. It is believed the fire started by the improper disposal of a cigarette.
Smoking material should always be extinguished in a proper ashtray or deep metal container.
Langside Street Fire
At 4:31 am WFPS were called to a two-storey house in the 500 block of Langside Street. This is the same house that crews had battled a fire in two days earlier.
Smoke and flames were coming from the house and an offensive attack was launched. The fire was under control by 4:54 am.
No one was found inside the structure after a search. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire and the previous fire in the home are under investigation.
