One taken to hospital from Kennedy Street apartment fire

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a a six-storey apartment building on Kennedy Street at 5:52 pm on Monday, April 26, 2021, for a report of a fire.

When crews arrived they encountered heavy smoke in the structure. A second alarm was called to increase the number of crew and equipment on scene. An offensive attack was launched. The fire was declared under control at 6:31 pm.

Fire officials say the blaze was contained to the suite that it began in.

Some occupants in the building were able to get themselves out while some others needed help from firefighters to exit the building. Many of the residents on floors not impacted by the fire were told to shelter in place.

Four people were assessed by paramedics and one was taken to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported

Once emergency crews were able to complete ventilating the building everyone was able to return except for those who lived in the suite that had the fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
