One person shot, 4 stabbed during violent weekend

Winnipeg Police responded to 14 cases involving gunfire, including one where a male had been shot and four stabbings in a 24 hour period this weekend.

Police say the incidents began Saturday May 23, 2020, around 10:55 am when officers received a report of an adult female being stabbed on Pacific Avenue. She was taken to hospital in critical condition. A female was arrested in relation to the case and has been charged with Aggravated Assault.

Around 3:15 pm reports of gunfire on Bannatyne Avenue brought police into the area. The Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate.

A shooting on Furby Street at Sargent Avenue happened around 8:20 pm and the incident spilt over to the intersection of Sherbrook Street and Cumberland Avenue.

The shooting victim was taken to hospital and is recovering.

Police had the Sherbrook and Cumberland closed until shortly after midnight as members of the Identification and Major Crimes Units investigated.

Witnesses tell News 4 that police had a scuffle with one person in the intersection. Although police are not releasing details about what happened in the intersection one officer on scene told News 4 that one person had been taken to hospital.

Just before 10:00 pm another call for gunshots came in this time on Dufferin Avenue followed by and unrelated report of a male seen with a gun on Sutton Avenue an hour later.

The night didn’t end there, over the next two-and-a-half hours’ officers responded to three more unrelated stabbings.

At 11:20 a male was stabbed on Portage Avenue. He is currently recovering in hospital.

At 1:45 am Sunday morning, May 24, 2020, a male was stabbed on Mountain Avenue. Police have detained a male suspect. The victim is recovering in hospital.

Five minutes later at 1:50 am another male was stabbed on Logan Avenue. He is currently recovering in hospital.

Investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
