One Man in Custody Following Violent Robbery on Edmonton Street

A 32-year-old man is in custody following a violent robbery and assault that occurred in the 300 block of Edmonton Street late Tuesday night.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers from the Central District responded to a report of an armed robbery at approximately 10:35 p.m. on March 19, 2025.

The incident began when a man in his 60s was approached by an unknown male who asked for a cigarette. When the victim replied that he did not have one, the suspect initially walked away, but then returned and began physically assaulting the victim, punching him repeatedly.

A second man, in his 50s, witnessed the assault and attempted to intervene. At this point, the suspect allegedly brandished a knife and threatened the second victim with it. The suspect then fled the scene, and police were immediately contacted.

While officers were interviewing the victims, they spotted a male matching the suspect’s description walking nearby on Kennedy Street. He was promptly apprehended and taken into custody.

The initial victim sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment at the scene.

The arrested individual has been identified as Joshua Michael Courchene, 32, of Winnipeg. He has been charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Robbery
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon

Courchene has been detained in custody.
