One dead in late-night fire in Osborne Village

Emergency crews were called to a fire in a two-storey house on Wardlaw Avenue around 11:00 pm on Sunday, August 15, 2021.

Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the structure as firefighters arrived. The fire had extended to a nearby commercial building that fronted on Scott Street.

A defensive attack was launched until it was safe for firefighters to enter both buildings. The fire was declared under control at 1:00 am.

Fire officials say that there was no one in the house at the time of the fire. The commercial building had a convenience store on the lower level and a residence on the second floor. One person self evacuated from the residence and was taken to hospital in stable condition.

A woman in her 60’s was rescued from the building and taken to hospital in critical condition. She died shortly afterwards according to police.

One firefighter was assessed on scene but did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported.

Both buildings suffered extensive damage due to the fire, smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Winnipeg Police Homicide detectives are investigating the death of the female victim.
