RCMP in western Manitoba are investigating a serious collision that claimed the life of a 42-year-old Saskatchewan man on Monday, February 21, 2022.
The collision happened around 10:20 am near Road 81 West and according to investigators the debris field from the collision was nearly a kilometre long.
RCMP say the investigation indicates that the semi was travelling at a reduced rate of speed due to weather conditions in the westbound lane of Highway 1. The SUV was travelling eastbound in the westbound lane at what police describe as a high rate of speed. Although the semi was able to partially move to the shoulder in an attempt to avoid the collision the SUV crashed into the trailer. Investigators say witnesses had observed the SUV driving erratically in the area prior to the collision.
Police say the driver of the SUV was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the semi suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The investigation continues.
