The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has completed an investigation into an arrest and injury to the suspect on Long Plain First Nation just west of Portage la Prairie and cleared the officers involved from the Dakota Ojibway Police Service.

On May 19, 2016, Dakota Ojibway Police Service (DOPS) were called to a home on the Long Plain First Nation, where a male was attempting to gain entry to the home through a broken window. The suspect was bleeding from several cuts. He was arrested and taken to hospital in Portage la Prairie where he complained of a sore wrist. Doctors examined and x-rayed the wrist and could not find a fracture or dislocation.

In court the next day the suspect complained in provincial court that DOPS officers had broken his wrist. As soon as the allegation was made against the officers the IIU assumed responsibility for the investigation.

In his findings report Civilian Director Zane Tessler wrote that based on the medical and x-ray reports, he is satisfied the affected person did not suffer any fractured bones to his left wrist or arm and accordingly did not suffer a serious injury. Tessler said in his report that the officer used reasonable force based on the circumstances.
