Two police officers assaulted while attempting arrest
While patrolling in the area of Boyd Avenue and Powers Street on February 26, 2017 officers came across a man who had been assaulted. It appears the victim may have been struck with a bat in the upper body.
Police located a male suspect in the 400 block of Boyd Avenue armed with a bat. Officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon multiple times which he refused to do. The suspect approached police in an aggressive manner causing one officer to shoot the suspect with a taser. It did not stop the suspect.
Police were eventually able to disarm the suspect but were physically assaulted during the confrontation. At one point the suspect was able to disarm one of the officers of his taser and the fire it towards police narrowly missing them.
The suspect, Robert James CHAYKOWSKI, 19 from Winnipeg was taken into custody and faces a number of charges for his alleged involvement including:
- Pointing a Firearm
- Discharge a Restricted Firearm or a Prohibited Firearm with Intent
- Disarming a Peace officer
- Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon
- Use of Firearm during Commission of an Indictable Offence
- Possession of a Weapon x 2
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Obtained by Crime
- Resist Peace Officer
- Assault Peace Officer x 4
- Assault Cause Bodily Harm
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order x 2
- Mischief Under $5000.00
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Probation Order
A female suspect attempted to interfere with officers and was also placed under arrest and charged with:
- Attempt Obstruct Justice
- Possession of Scheduled Substance – Cannabis
She was released on a promise to appear.
Both police officers were treated and released from hospital for minor injuries.
