Officer stabbed, suspect shot, IIU investigating

A Winnipeg Police officer is recovering after being stabbed in the shoulder at an incident in the maples late this afternoon. The suspect in the stabbing was shot by officers and taken to hospital in critical condition.

It all began around 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 23, 2017, Police were called to a home in the 100 block of Madrigal Close in the Maples for the report of a stabbing.

As officers arrived an altercation was underway and a 35-year-old Tactical Support Team member was stabbed in the upper body causing a serious injury to his shoulder. A tactical tourniquet was applied to the injured officer in order to stabilize him for transport. He was taken to hospital and remains in unstable condition. The officer’s condition improved and on Sunday he was reported to be in stable condition

The 33-year-old male suspect was shot by another officer on scene and was taken to hospital in critical condition. Just after 10:30 pm Winnipeg Police updated media to say the suspect had died of his injuries.

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, the Independent Investigation Unit has been notified of the incident and will be investigating.
