Officer-involved shooting justified, says IIU

An October 18, 2019 officer-involved shooting was justified according to a report by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).

The incident under investigation began when officers from the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance.

When place entered the home they found an unresponsive female lying face down on the floor.

Officers then encountered a male in the bathroom. The male approached officers while at the same time raising a knife in an overhand grip. One officer fired his service sidearm hitting the male in the left shoulder. A second officer discharged his taser.

The male was taken to hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and apparent self-inflicted lacerations to his neck.

After an extensive investigation the IIU civilian director determined the officer’s decision to shot the man was justified, unavoidable and necessary to prevent death or injury to the officers on scene.
