Winnipeg Police say that shortly before 8:00 pm on Friday, January 11, 2019, an officer-involved serious incident happened in the 600
Multiple police units including members of the Tactical Support Team responded to the area between Sargent Avenue and Ellice Avenue.
Police say that officers encountered a 26-year-old male near Sargent and Maryland who was acting suspiciously. As they approached the male took off but officers caught up to him in a vacant lot less than two blocks away. The suspect pulled out a weapon according to police and officers shot the male.
Officers provided emergency treatment to the male’s wounds as they waited for paramedics to arrive. The man was taken to hospital in critical condition but has since died.
A video that is quickly going viral was posted online and appears to shows officers attending to a person on the ground. (an edited version can be viewed below)
Witnesses on social media are alleging they heard five shots after officers were seen chasing a male on foot.
Sherbrook Street was blocked for several hours overnight as investigators looked into the shooting.
Winnipeg Police say that the investigation has been handed over to the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba.
The IIU is asking anyone with information of video footage of the incident to contact them at 1-844-667-6060
Earlier this week Winnipeg Police were involved in another shooting incident. On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, police had responded to a report of an assault with a weapon near McLeod Avenue and Raleigh Street. Police initiated a containment block after pursuing the suspects but they rammed through the police vehicles at which time officers fired on the vehicle.
