Officer involved in fatal shooting of teen won’t face charges

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says no charges will be laid against the officer who shot and killed 16-year-old Eishia Hudson, the driver of a stolen vehicle being chased by police in April of 2020.

The IIU was called in to investigate the shooting at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Fermor Avenue. Officers had been chasing the stolen vehicle that was allegedly involved in a Liquor Mart robbery in Sage Creek.

The incident was capture on cellphone video and shots can be heard as the vehicle reversed after crossing the median and hitting a vehicle.

Investigators talked to witnesses, reviewed photographs and video taken by a number of civilian witnesses, reviewed reports and notes from officers on the scene, watched surveillance video from various businesses, listened to audio recordings from Winnipeg Police radios and the 911 call centre, along with reviewing various other reports and evidence.

Upon completion of the investigation the entire investigative file was provided to Manitoba Prosecution Services (MPS) for an opinion. On December 22, 2020, MPS advised the IIU that they were not recommending any criminal charges against the officer involved in the shooting.
