Officer cleared in June 2022 fatal shooting of an armed male

Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit has completed the investigation into the fatal shooting of an armed male by a Winnipeg Police Service officer.

On June 17, 2022, an officer had just completed a traffic stop on Mountain Avenue at Salter Street and was sitting in his police unit when he was approached by an individual armed with a knife.

A confrontation occurred and the male suspect was shot by the officer. The suspect was taken to hospital but did not survive his injuries.

The IIU was notified of the incident and began an investigation.

Investigators reviewed multiple reports, images and audio recordings and spoke with 16 civilian witnesses.

It was determined after the investigation that there were no reasonable grounds to support any charges against the officer.
