A Sandy Bay man is in custody after trying to flee from police and assaulting an officer during his arrest.
Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officers were on patrol in Sandy Bay on Friday February 12, 2021, when they spotted a speeding vehicle. A traffic stop was attempted but the suspect turned off his lights and sped away.
Shortly afterwards the vehicle lost control and slid into a ditch. The driver fled the vehicle on foot. Officers chased the male when he suddenly turned towards police and became aggressive. The suspect resisted arrest and tried to remove the officers sidearm.
After he was secured the suspect spit in the arresting officers face several times and yelled that he was HIV positive.
32-year-old Richard William Sutherland faces charges for his alleged involvement with Aggravated Assault on Police, Attempted to Disarma Police Officer, Resist Arrest, Operation of motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, Flight from Police Officer, Operation of motor vehicle while prohibited, Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and Fail to comply with probation.
The officers were treated by emergency medical personnel and cleared.
