Off-duty RCMP officer assaulted in Winnipeg

Two Winnipeg men are facing charges after an off-duty RCMP officer was assaulted in Winnipeg.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the incident happened just after 3:00 pm in the 800 block of Buchanan Boulevard on February 6, 2024. Two men, investigators say, were causing a disturbance in a vehicle parked on the street outside an elementary school. The off-duty RCMP officer approached the suspect’s vehicle, identified himself and asked them to leave the area due to their behaviour near the school.

The suspects became irate, exited their vehicle and threatened and assaulted the officer. Several bystanders intervened in an attempt to stop the assault on the officer. The officer suffered upper-body injuries and later went to hospital to receive treatment.

The suspects were arrested by WPS members without incident.

The two suspects, a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old man were charged for their alleged involvement with Assault Peace Officer, Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm and Causing a Disturbance.

The 44-year-old was also charged with Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired to Any Degree by BAC or Drug or a Combination of Both and Within 2 hrs of Ceasing to Operate a Conveyance is Impaired with BAC Equal or Over 80 mgs.

Both men were released on undertakings.
