Winnipeg Police are investigating after an off-duty police officer was assaulted while attempting to apprehend a suspect.

According to police, the officer had been riding a Winnipeg Transit bus downtown when an altercation began between two males and another man. The officer intervened and identified himself. The male victim got off the bus and was followed by one of the other males who began to assault him. The officer got off the bus and intervened and the suspect took off running. The officer pursued and was able to take the suspect to the ground with the help of a nearby construction worker.

Both the officer and the construction worker were sprayed with an unknown substance. The suspect fled the scene.
