The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has initiated an investigation into a theft incident that reportedly involved an off-duty police officer at a convenience store in Winkler.
The incident, which occurred on January 18, 2025, but was only reported to authorities on January 22, has raised public interest.
According to the Winkler Police Service, an adult male allegedly exited the convenience store on First Street without paying for an item. It was later revealed that the individual involved was an off-duty officer.
Following the notification of the incident to the IIU by the Winkler Police Service, the civilian director of the IIU determined that the situation warranted independent oversight due to its nature.
