NO MORE EXPENSING BOOZE AT CITY HALL IF MAYOR GETS HIS WAY

Mayor Brian Bowman wants the city to adopt a policy that would make alcohol an ineligible expense for Councillors.

“As elected members, we are stewards of taxpayer money and we need to ensure the expenses we incur are reasonable and reflect what the public expects of their elected representatives,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I believe that all alcohol, regardless of the reason it’s purchased, should not be an expense borne by taxpayers.”

Under the current guidelines for Councillors alcohol is a legitimate expense when it is bought as part of a reception for constituents, business contacts, delegation visitors or representatives from other levels of government.

In 2016 Mayor Bowman implemented a policy for his own expenses that makes booze ineligible to be expensed to the city.

The motion is expected to be placed in front of  the Executive Policy Committee today and if adopted will still need to go before council.
