No charges against police in 2019 officer-involved shooting

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency says that no charges will be laid against two officers who shot at a fleeing vehicle resulting in minor injuries to suspect.

On January 9, 2019, The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) began an investigation into an officer-involved shooting.

Winnipeg Police had been pursuing a vehicle after an attempted stabbing in northeast Winnipeg. During the pursuit, the driver of the suspect vehicle refused to stop, rammed Winnipeg Police vehicles several times and drove towards officers. Two WPS officers discharged their service handguns during the interaction.

When the vehicle was finally stopped and the suspects taken into custody police learned that one of the suspects suffered a minor injury to his neck. The injured male was taken to hospital, treated and released back into WPS custody.

IIU investigated the case since an injury caused by the discharge of a police firearm is considered serious and is mandated under their regulations.

Following an extensive investigation and in consultation with Manitoba Prosecution Services (MPS) it was determined that case did not meet the prosecution-charging standard. No Criminal Code charges against the subject officers would, therefore, be authorized by MPS.

The investigation by IIU is complete.
