Manitoba’s  Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has completed investigating two separate police shooting incidents and says that neither officer involved will face any charges.

On January 28, 2022, officers responded to a fight in progress at the Siloam Mission parking lot. When officers arrived they located a male suffering stab wounds and a male suspect nearby.

The situation with the suspect escalated and resulted in one officer discharging his service handgun. The male suspect sustained one gunshot to the head and one shot to the hip. He was taken to hospital.

The IIU investigated and after meeting with several civilian witnesses, four Winnipeg Police Service Officers and a member of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service they learned that the suspect was armed with a knife and refused to comply with officers to drop it. He also took a swing at an officer with the knife which caused another officer to shoot the suspect several times.

The investigation concluded that there are no reasonable grounds to charge the subject officer.

The IIU also investigated a Gertrude Avenue police-involved shooting on July 13, 2022.

Officers had responded to a male outside a residence with a firearm. As officers tried to escalate the situation an attempt to disarm the suspect was made using a taser. That resulted in the man pointing the firearm towards the officers at which point one of the officers discharged their service handgun. The male was taken to hospital in unstable condition but was later upgraded to stable.

Investigators from the IIU talked to 10 witness officers, nine civilian witnesses and the suspect.

Upon completion of the investigation, it was determined that there are no reasonable grounds for charges against the subject officer.
