Manitoba’s Police watchdog agency, The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says that no charges will be laid against an officer who used a “less lethal” firearm on two suspect during an arrest in March of this year.
The conclusion comes from an investigation into the arrest of two male suspects who were involved in the parental abduction of two children.
RCMP were investigating the complaint that two children under two years old were abducted by their biological parents after a supervised visit in the RM of Hanover.
Police were told that the suspects were believed to be heading to the Roseau River area.
Officers found the vehicle at a home in the RM of Emmerson-Franklin and as they pulled up to the address they were met by eight people who surrounded the officers and began to attack them.
In response to the assault officers were reported to have used the “less lethal” firearm to subdue them. the pair suffered minor injuries.
The IIU is mandated to investigate if there is an injury as a result of a firearm discharge by police.
The civilian director was not satisfied that reasonable grounds exist to charge the RCMP officer who discharged the firearm with any offence, and, accordingly, no charges will be authorized against him.
