Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is investigating nine overnight fires that they say are suspicious in nature.
Six outdoor fires, a garbage fire and two structure fires occurred in the Northend between 2:43 am and 9:03 am on Monday, May 11, 2020.
- 2:43 am outdoor fire 600 block of McGregor Street
- 4:39 am vacant house fire 500 block of Selkirk Avenue
- 5:35 am outdoor fire 600 block of McGregor Street
- 5:50 am garbage fire 400 block of Manitoba Avenue
- 6:44 am outdoor fire 400 block of Selkirk Avenue
- 7:52 am outdoor fire 100 block of Salter Avenue
- 8:26 am outdoor fire 300 block of Selkirk Avenue
- 8:26 am structure fire 300 block of Selkirk Avenue
- 9:03 am outdoor fire 300 block of Selkirk Avenue
Fire officials say that they are concerned about the outdoor fires due to how quickly they can spread to nearby buildings and structures.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2020, an outdoor fire in St. Norbert was started in a debris pile and quickly spread to a parked car and the home within minutes.
Officials say that you can help prevent outdoor fires by following a few tips.
- Keep garbage, yard waste, or bulky waste (such as old furniture) away from buildings, garages, and fences. Call 311 to arrange for bulky waste pickup.
- Only put your garbage and recycling carts and yard waste out on your collection day.
- Store flammable materials safely.
- Keep shrubs and trees near buildings trimmed and watered, and ensure they are regularly cleared of dead plant matter.
- Keep doors and windows secured.
- Use motion-activated lights to brighten the outside of your home or business.
