Two people had an unpleasant beginning to the new year after allegedly being assaulted near a downtown club just steps away from police headquarters.
Police responded to the report of a large fight in the 200 block of Garry Street around 1:00 am. When officers arrived on the scene they located an unconscious adult male just inside the entryway of a club with wounds consistent with being assaulted. Witnesses tell news 4 that the male appears to have been hit in the head and was unresponsive.
Police cordoned off a nearby parking lot as hundreds of party-goers left the club and gathered on the street. Several individuals ducked under the police tape in an attempt to access vehicles but were ordered out of the scene as officers investigated. A baseball bat and a golf club were seized from the parking lot by officers
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service treated the injured male at the scene, who was still unconscious as paramedics transported him to the hospital in unstable condition. A second male was also transported to the hospital in unstable condition according to police.
No arrests have been made.
