The City of Winnipeg is adding to the tools it provides residents to help them get around the city.
Earlier this year Winnipeg partnered with WAZE, a service that provides real-time GPS navigation with live updates on Winnipeg traffic delays and issues from the cities Traffic Management Centre. WAZE is a free app for IOS and Android smartphones that uses traffic information from all it’s users to improve the driving experience.
News 4 is also a broadcast partner with WAZE and users have the opportunity to join the “News4 Traffic Trackers Team” within the app. Viewers can also access live traffic maps by clicking here
On June 13, 2017 the city added an on-line road construction map that shows you all of the planned Public Works Department projects for 2017. Projects shown on the map include more than 150 road construction projects scheduled for this year, as well as pedestrian and cycling projects, streets maintenance projects and traffic signal upgrades.
“With such a significant investment in the City’s infrastructure this year, Winnipeggers can expect a busy and productive construction season,” said Councillor Marty Morantz, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “This online map is a great tool to help citizens see the work that this investment is going towards, and help plan their travel routes.”
The road construction map provides project information visually by location. By clicking on a highlighted project on the map, a box will appear with project details such as:
- type of infrastructure (street, alley, sidewalk, traffic signal, bridge project, pedestrian and cycling path),
- type of construction work (reconstruction, rehabilitation, mill and fill, thin bituminous overlay),
- estimated start date,
- estimated end date,
- percentage completed, and
- consultant and contractor information.
As construction projects begin, start dates, completion dates and per cent complete will be updated to reflect project status.
