New Temporary Fire-Paramedic Station Commissioned in Waverley West

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) has announced the commissioning of a new temporary modular station in the rapidly expanding neighborhood of Waverley West. As of January 11, 2025, this innovative station aims to provide faster and more efficient emergency services to the area.

Mayor Scott Gillingham expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This modular fire-paramedic station is an innovative solution that ensures we can deliver services to this rapidly-growing neighborhood faster while we work on building a permanent station. Our preliminary 2025 budget reflects our strong commitment to public safety by investing in staff, equipment, and facilities like this to meet the demands of our growing city.”

The station, located at 130 Eaglewood Dr., has been operational since December with a fire engine and a four-person fire/rescue crew, as well as an ambulance and a two-person paramedic crew. However, it has now been officially commissioned, marking a significant milestone for the community.

David Pankratz, MLA for Waverley, emphasized the importance of this development, saying, “As a former firefighter, I understand firsthand how critical emergency services are for Manitoba families. Alongside the 40 new firefighters funded by the Province, this fire-paramedic station will provide essential support to the many families who call south Winnipeg home.”

The new station is expected to significantly reduce emergency response times in Waverley West until the completion of a permanent facility. This project is part of WFPS’s 2020 Strategic Direction, a comprehensive plan to address Winnipeg’s current and future fire and paramedic service needs.

Councillor Janice Lukes expressed her excitement, stating, “Residents of Waverley West are thrilled to be welcoming the WFPS crew to their new home in the heart of our rapidly growing community.”

The modular station, assembled over the course of a few months, required additional time for site preparation, utilities connection, and the completion of the purchase. Fire and Paramedic Chief Christian Schmidt highlighted the urgency of the project, saying, “I am proud to officially declare this building open today. As call volumes continue to increase in this area, I am pleased that crews are responding from within Waverley West, and building a modular station ensured this happened as quickly as possible.”

The total cost of the project was $6.8 million, covering the building, site preparation, and assembly. Notably, the modular parts can be disassembled and reassembled at another location once the permanent station is ready.
